While some of it has been self-inflicted, the last couple of seasons have been a roller coaster for Romeo Doubs. Green Bay Packers fans are well aware of the veteran wide receiver's confusing standing with the franchise, making the recent reporting about him striking.

In their latest intel dump, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano discussed the "most likely" players to get contract extensions over the next two months. The former mentioned a few (non-Packers) names before surprisingly identifying Doubs as someone to watch.

Doubs is "on [Fowler's] radar" as a candidate to re-up with his club, "depending on how things shake out on the field." That's quite a 180 from the team-issued suspension and trade speculation that have swirled around the Packers wideout in the past calendar year.

Packers fans left delightfully confused by WR Romeo Doubs being labeled contract extenstion candidate

The Packers handed down a one-game ban to Doubs for "conduct detrimental to the team" roughly 365 days ago. He missed two days of practice and meetings for what the Packers initially described as “personal reasons.” However, it was revealed that the absences stemmed from discontent over his role in the offense, or lack thereof (h/t Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated).

Ultimately, Doubs and the Packers have since settled their differences aside and moved forward, though not without some additional theatrics. Green Bay “definitely” explored the idea of shipping the 2022 fourth-round pick elsewhere this offseason, per Graziano. It marked the latest sign that the front office was unwilling to commit to him long term, or so we thought.

Fast-forward to the present, and Doubs has suddenly played himself into Green Bay’s future. The Packers have shown no desire to reroute him and could instead pivot to ensuring he stays in Titletown beyond 2025. His rapport with quarterback Jordan Love is only growing stronger, which ostensibly hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Currently in the final campaign of his rookie pact, Doubs, 25, is slated for unrestricted free agency. If the Packers want to give him a new deal, doing so before he hits the open market makes sense. Otherwise, they might find themselves in a bidding war to retain his services.
