It didn't take long for the Green Bay Packers to realize they would eventually lose quarterback Malik Willis to free agency. After a limited showing late in 2025, Willis showed everything he needed to in order to land a free agent deal this offseason.

Once he signed a multi-year contract with the Miami Dolphins, Willis left an empty seat at the Packers' quarterback table. Behind Jordan Love, the Packers didn't necessarily have their answer -- until now.

Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Packers have agreed to terms with free agent quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

The longtime journeyman has signed in Green Bay and the Packers have their new backup quarterback.

At first glance, it would be easy to say that Taylor might not be the best-possible option to back up Love. Over the last five years, Taylor has been fairly mediocre in his limited starts, throwing 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

But, if you look at the totality of his NFL production, he has long been a player who doesn't lose games. He might not be the reason the Packers win, if he's called upon, but Taylor will also avoid being the reason Green Bay loses games.

Now, that would have to mean Love goes down to an injury first, which we're all hoping and praying against.

Still, in the right offense and with good coaching, the Packers could have done much worse than Taylor. The veteran will be 37 years old by the time the regular season is underway, but he was also the best option as it stood.

Going back to the 2026 NFL Draft, fans knew a move like this was coming when the Packers didn't use a single pick on the quarterback position. Now, that's not to say they needed to, nor were they expected to.

But, it seemed fairly obvious that someone like Taylor would be joining the fold after the quarterback room was left with names like Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord as the best-possible options on the roster after draft weekend.

Now, the locker room gets a strong leader and locker room presence in Taylor. But, more importantly, the Packers get some insurance for their franchise quarterback.
