Josh Jacobs is firmly entrenched as the Green Bay Packers' bell-cow running back. The question of who will spell him very much remains up in the air, though, and an interesting solution may be emerging: Isaac Guerendo.
By the sound of it, Guerendo appears to be on the outs with the San Francisco 49ers. Increased competition for playing time could reportedly render him expendable, per Vic Tafur of The Athletic. So, depending on how things unfold in the Bay Area, the Packers might get a chance to swoop in and snag a backup to Jacobs.
"Guerendo, drafted in the fourth round just two years ago, seems like he is buried and will be looking for a new team," Tafur wrote ($).
Isaac Guerendo's murky future with 49ers could hand Packers perfect RB solution
San Francisco has told us how they feel about Guerendo with their actions. The club has invested mid-round picks in the position in consecutive offseasons. Suddenly, he's taking a backseat to rising second-year pro Jordan James and incoming third-round rookie Kaelon Black, as Tafur highlighted.
However, one man's trash is another man's treasure. While Guerendo is evidently falling out of favor in San Francisco, he can be a real difference-maker for the Packers. His explosiveness and playmaking juice would be a welcome addition behind the bruising Jacobs.
If Guerendo, who turns 26 in June, is released, he makes for an intriguing low-risk, high-upside option. The Louisville product has an elite blend of size (6-foot, 221 pounds) and speed, and pass-catching chops to boot. His tantalizing physical profile is reflected in an outstanding 9.89 Relative Athletic Score, ranking 21st out of 1904 tailbacks from 1987 to 2024.
The 49ers oddly relegated Guerendo to special teams duties last season following an impressive rookie campaign. Injuries were notably a factor, as they have been for him since college. Yet, he was one of 13 backs with 25-plus carries to average five yards or more per attempt (5.0) in 2024; his 40.7 breakaway percentage was eighth (h/t Pro Football Focus).
Durability concerns are valid with Guerendo, but his home run-hitting ability is too much to ignore. He has the skill set to be an ideal complement to Jacobs in Green Bay. Not to mention, the similarities in offensive schemes of Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and the 49ers' Kyle Shanahan make the fit even better.
