Packers insider floats idea of reunion with one of Aaron Rodgers' favorite teammates

While the Green Bay Packers didn't make a ton of selections in the 2026 NFL Draft, making just six picks over two days (remember they didn't have a first-rounder), they did a decent job filling some gaps.

Naturally, with the draft now in the rearview, outlets everywhere have been opining on some remaining free agents who could help this team or that team, and our pal Bill Huber over at Green Bay Packers on SI recently constructed a list of five free agents who he says could "push the Packers over the top."

And the opening choice was a little surprising, as the very first name on his list was none other than veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis.

The Packers reuniting with Marcedes Lewis is a low-risk move, but it's not likely to happen

For those wondering, the other five on Huber's list were running back Antonio Gibson, offensive tackle Kendall Lamm, defensive tackle Calais Campbell, and edge rusher Haason Reddick, all of whom are intriguing options. But here's what he had to say about a possible reunion with Lewis:

"The Packers lost their physical blocking tight end, John FitzPatrick, to a torn Achilles late last season. It was slim pickings in the NFL Draft to fill that role, as Gutekunst said.

While former Browns star David Njoku would obviously bring an enticing receiving threat to the offense – he caught only 33 passes last season but had 64 a year earlier – the lone big blocker on the market is old friend Marcedes Lewis.

Lewis, who played 81 snaps in five games for the Broncos last season, will turn 42 next month. Obviously, he's not going to be the powerful presence he was with the Packers from 2018 through 2022, but he'd take some of the run-blocking stress off Tucker Kraft as he comes back from a torn ACL."

I've gotta say that I don't hate this idea. I mean, is a soon-to-be 42-year-old tight end (his birthday is May 19) going to "push the Packers over the top" as Huber puts it? Well, of course not. But it's certainly not the worst move in the world.

Lewis, who became the oldest tight end ever to play an NFL game last season with the Broncos, by the way, spent five seasons wearing the Green & Gold from 2018 to 2022, catching 57 passes for 582 yards and six touchdowns.

As Huber mentioned, of course, the 20-year veteran, who has reportedly been heard saying that he does want to play a 21st season, wouldn't be brought in to catch passes but as a blocking tight end. And he's undoubtedly always been solid in that regard, both in the running game and in pass protection.

Plus, the Packers can likely get him for the league minimum of $1.3 million, and adding a veteran presence to a locker room full of young players is never a bad idea. Green Bay really has nothing to lose here.
