In what had become months upon months of speculation, questions, whispers and rumors, the Green Bay Packers finally did it. They made their decision on cornerback Jaire Alexander.
With the Packers choosing to release the former Pro Bowler, Green Bay has now put their biggest offseason failure directly under the spotlight.
Brian Gutekunst refused to address cornerback depth in a way that would prepare the team for a move such as this, and because of that, Green Bay might be scrambling for help. Behind Alexander, there was already a paper-thin group of corners.
Now? Yikes.
The Packers are now desperate for help at cornerback without Jaire Alexander
Fans have to be thinking the exact same thing right now.
There was always a good chance the Packers were going to move on from Alexander. This was no secret. In fact, it had become a tiresome topic.
So, why didn't this team prepare for it?
Now, the Packers are left with a likely starting duo of Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine on the outside. Next in line is 2025 seventh-round pick Micah Robinson.
This isn't to say Nixon and Valentine couldn't surprise us and step up to the plate, but just how confident are we in the two of them to become a formidable starting duo?
In short, there shouldn't be a rousing stamp of approval here. Nixon has yet to prove himself as a full-time corner who can be dependable week-in and week-out. Valentine has had his moments, but the same can be said about him.
There is little reason to believe the two of them are good enough to roll with, and even if they were, how on earth do the Packers survive an injury at the position?
Truthfully, they wouldn't. This team must go out and find help, whether it be via the trade market or what's left of the free agent pool.
Could that be via Jalen Ramsey? Might Stephon Gilmore be on his way out of the free agent crop, finally? Whatever the move is, the Packers need to make it soon.
