Trevon Diggs was in Titletown for a good time, not a long one. The Green Bay Packers have reportedly decided to move on from the veteran cornerback, marking an unceremonious end to his brief stint with the club.

The Packers have released Diggs, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, after playing just 34 defensive snaps (and two on special teams). It's a steep fall from grace for someone who earned All-Pro First Team honors in 2021 with a historic campaign, though not an unexpected outcome.

Green Bay was never going to take on the remainder of the five-year, $97 million contract extension Diggs signed with the Dallas Cowboys in July 2023. Taking a massive pay cut to stay with the Packers or getting cut in a cost-saving move were the only two realistic options.

Yesterday's price isn't today's rate. Unfortunately, Diggs hasn't reached the heights he did early with the Cowboys, largely because of health (or lack thereof). So, instead of committing to him at well above his current market value, the Packers are choosing to save approximately $15 million and pay nothing now.

For whatever it's worth, there's a world in which Diggs rejoins the Packers on a cheaper deal in free agency. This could've just been a procedural transaction with hopes of getting back together in due course. However, there's also a decent possibility their short-lived partnership reached its end.

Diggs' arrival in Green Bay was a product of desperation, plus his well-chronicled connection to star pass-rusher Micah Parsons. The Packers' secondary got ravaged by injuries, and they needed bodies badly, so they brought in depth while appeasing their franchise player.

Nevertheless, the Diggs experiment failed before it seemingly ever began. He logged a single snap in Green Bay's crushing Wild Card loss to the Chicago Bears. The 27-year-old recorded three tackles across two appearances with the Packers, including the minor playoff cameo.

Alas, Diggs may be damaged goods at this stage of his career. He's no longer the ball-hawking corner opposing quarterbacks need to be mindful of. It's been that way since he suffered an ACL tear in 2023, roughly two months after Dallas gave him a boatload of cash.
