The Green Bay Packers lost Romeo Doubs to the New England Patriots in free agency this offseason. Doubs inked a four-year deal worth $68 million with the Patriots and he can earn up to $80 million in incentives. While Doubs was fine during his time with the Packers, he wasn't worth that price and Green Bay was wise to let him walk.
Mike Sando of The Athletic recently shared what NFL execs were saying about some of the free-agent signings so far this offseason. When it comes to Doubs joining the Patriots, one exec liked Doubs but said he's a bit inconsistent. That was the nice comment aimed toward Doubs.
Another exec is not a huge fan of Doubs and wasn't shy about voicing it. That same exec did not feel as though the Patriots beefed up their receiver room enough after the Patriots released Stefon Diggs.
“I was not high on Doubs,” a third exec said, citing the receiver’s inconsistent concentration. “They did not improve on the field from (Stefon) Diggs. Maybe they did off the field from a headache standpoint. It seems just a matter of waiting until June 1 passes for Philly to trade A.J. Brown, who in my opinion is a declining player each of the last three seasons.”
Brutal Romeo Doubs take confirms Packers dodged costly mistake
Packers fans won't be shocked to hear these types of comments aimed at Doubs. He was a solid player during his time in Green Bay, but overall, he wasn't worth that kind of contract and the Patriots are paying him to be a bonafide star, which he might not live up to.
With Doubs off to a different team, the Packers are currently rolling with Matthew Golden, Jayden Reed, and Christian Watson as their starting receivers. The Patriots meanwhile will have Doubs joining Kayshon Boutte and Mack Hollins, so that room could definitely still use some help.
It'll be interesting to see how Doubs does with his new team in 2026. He'll have a great quarterback throwing to him, as Drake Maye helped lead the Patriots to a Super Bowl appearance in just his second year on the job and nearly won league MVP.
Will that be enough to make this contract worth it for New England? Will Packers fans have the last laugh? We'll have to see how things play out for Doubs as he takes the next step in his NFL journey.
