The Green Bay Packers ostensibly understand that backup quarterback Malik Willis, who's entering unrestricted free agency this offseason, has earned the opportunity to start elsewhere. That's why the team has wasted no time replenishing the NFL's most important position by signing Kyle McCord to a reserve/future contract.
McCord finished his rookie campaign on the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad, the club he was drafted by in the sixth round of the 2025 draft. However, league rules allowed him and the Packers to join forces, and the timing couldn't be much better for Green Bay.
With Willis already connected to multiple non-Packers suitors, McCord could accidentally become important at work, though Green Bay may have found its next hidden gem.
Kyle McCord could prove to be the Packers' Malik Willis replacement
While things didn't work out for McCord in Philadelphia, a change of scenery may do him wonders. He was the fourth option in a crowded group of signal-callers headlined by Super Bowl LIX MVP Jalen Hurts. Nevertheless, his strong résumé entering the pros suggests there is untapped potential to be had.
Coming out of high school, which wasn't that long ago for the 23-year-old, McCord was a four-star prospect. He was touted as the No. 49 overall player and the No. 8 passer in 247Sports' 2021 recruiting rankings. His combination of size (6-foot-3, 218 pounds), football IQ, and arm strength landed him an opportunity at Ohio State.
It wasn't until his junior season that Ohio State turned to McCord as its starter. He earned All-Big Ten Third Team honors and guided the Buckeyes to a Cotton Bowl appearance before transferring to Syracuse, where his production skyrocketed.
In 2024, McCord led the nation in completions (391), passing attempts (592), and passing yards (4,779). He led Syracuse to a surprising 10-3 record and Holiday Bowl victory in a remarkable one-and-done season. His level of comfort in the program's pro-style offense shouldn't be overlooked.
Now latching onto a franchise known for developing talent under center, McCord has a chance to be the Packers' next success story. Fair or not, he wasn't given time to hone his craft in Philly. Green Bay has shown a willingness to be patient, with Willis being the latest example.
