Packers must sign one of these four free agents before it's too late

It is fair to say that the Green Bay Packers do not have any gaping holes on their current roster.

However, there is still plenty of talent available in free agency that could help bolster the team, particularly on the defensive end.

While Lukas Van Ness is quietly showing signs of promise, the pass rush is still an area to consider. So, too, is cornerback depth. From upgrading the front seven to finding secondary help, several remaining free agents can still make an impact on this budding Packers team.

Free agents the Packers should consider signing after the first week of training camp

1. Jadeveon Clowney, EDGE

Jadeveon Clowney has enjoyed a stable career in the NFL, as he prepares to enter his 12th season as a pro. Since being selected first overall by the Houston Texans in 2014, Clowney has played for six different franchises, putting up some respectable numbers in most of his seasons.

Although Clowney isn't a game-wrecker, he still managed to rack up 5.5 sacks and 22 quarterback pressures on a lackluster Carolina Panthers defense in 2024. For a young Packers team that had trouble getting after the quarterback last year, Clowney can be the veteran presence they need to take the next step as a unit.

At 32 years old, Clowney would easily be the oldest player on the Packers' defense. Still, with over a decade of NFL experience, there's no denying his consistent production.

2. Asante Samuel Jr., CB

Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. was supposedly someone who would have caught the Packers' attention early in free agency, although nothing ever panned out. In fact, many are still a little perplexed by the fact that Samuel is yet to sign for the upcoming season.

Although his 2024 season was cut short due to injury, he was a solid piece of the Los Angeles Chargers' secondary for a number of years. In a Packers cornerback room that lost Jaire Alexander earlier this offseason, Samuel would be a helpful addition.

Not only does he provide plenty of experience as a starting cornerback, but he would also bring excellent coverage and ball skills to Green Bay. From 2021 to 2023, Samuel defended 35 passes, including at least 11 in each season.

3. Justin Simmons, S

It was not that long ago that safety Justin Simmons was among the top safeties in the entire NFL for the Denver Broncos. After a one-year stint with the Atlanta Falcons, Simmons is once again on the open market.

With 62 combined tackles, two interceptions, and seven pass deflections last season, it is clear that Simmons still has plenty of ability on the field. The Packers' safety room is heavy at the top, with excellent talents in Xavier McKinney, Javon Bullard, and Evan Williams. But they would be foolish not to think about the opportunity to sign a player of Simmons' caliber.

Coach Matt LaFleur has always highlighted that the Packers would never be hesitant to add premier talent to their organization. If the price is right, it is a move that could elevate the Packers' secondary further on the back end.

4. Rasul Douglas, CB

Talk about a feel-good story for all Packers fans. During his time in Green Bay, Rasul Douglas instantly became a fan favourite by snagging a game-winning interception against the then-undefeated Arizona Cardinals.

His success did not stop there, as he stabilized the ship in the Packers' secondary, grabbing interception after interception, while being sound in coverage. Douglas was always a vocal competitor for the Packers' defense, where he truly made a name for himself and found a home.

Douglas made nine interceptions (including two pick-sixes) with the Packers before adding another four (including one score) with the Buffalo Bills.

There is no bad blood between Douglas and the organization, and a reunion is certainly not out of the question. Douglas loves the organization, they love Douglas, and the fans are on board. It feels like a match made in heaven.
