Packers sit in perfect draft spot to cash in on Chiefs' desperation

With the 2025 NFL Draft on the horizon, the Green Bay Packers have a big decision on what to do with the 23rd overall pick.

It's no secret that plenty of Cheeseheads are hoping the Packers snap a 20-plus-year streak and draft a wide receiver in the first round for the first time since taking Javon Walker at No. 20 back in 2002.

But it's also no secret that Green Bay needs defensive help. And at this point, one has to think that the cornerback, defensive end, and defensive tackle positions are all in play come Thursday night.

There is another option, of course, as the Packers could trade out of the 23rd spot. This particular scenario doesn't seem overly likely, but if general manager Brian Gutekunst were to hear an intriguing offer, he'd at least have to entertain it, right?

And if a report from ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller is accurate, the Kansas City Chiefs may just be desperate enough to give Green Bay that offer.

The Packers' No. 23 pick could be on the table for the Chiefs

In a recent column covering several aspects of the upcoming draft, Miller says the AFC champs could be in the market to trade up from their current first-round position at No. 31 overall, the objective being to add an offensive tackle.

"I've heard that the Kansas City Chiefs are actively looking to trade up in Round 1," Miller wrote. "They signed left tackle Jaylon Moore in free agency but were otherwise quiet, opting to re-sign their own versus hitting the open market."

"A move up in Round 1 would likely be for a long-term offensive tackle solution; I heard the goal would be to move in front of the Houston Texans (No. 25) and Los Angeles Rams (No. 26) if the Chiefs like a specific left tackle still on the board."

The top tackles such as LSU's Will Campbell and Missouri's Armand Membou will likely go off the board in the top 10, but perhaps the Chiefs are eyeballing the likes of Ohio State's Josh Simmons, Kelvin Banks Jr. out of Texas, or Oregon's Josh Conerly Jr., all of whom could be gone before Kansas City goes on the clock.

So, the logic makes sense, especially seeing as how the Texans and Rams both have needs at the tackle position.

At No. 23, the Packers obviously sit ahead of both of those teams. And while Green Bay owns eight total picks, Gutekunst could like the idea of adding one or two more, even if that means jumping back eight spots in the opening round.

The Chiefs have a pair of third-rounders at No. 66 and No. 95, so perhaps one of those might be in play.

The biggest problem here, however, is that the Minnesota Vikings are one pick behind at No. 24. And with the Vikes currently holding only four picks, they could be willing to take a little less than Green Bay would to trade back.

Again, it seems unlikely that the Packers will drop back, especially seeing as how the draft is taking place in Green Bay. The hometown crowd probably wouldn't take too kindly to Roger Goodell coming up to the podium to announce the Packers have traded out of the No. 23 spot—well, unless it's in the other direction.
