The Green Bay Packers are reportedly restructuring star safety Xavier McKinney's contract. This move gives the club more flexibility ahead of free agency, and it will be fascinating to see how they use it.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN was first on the news. He revealed that the Packers are converting McKinney's base salary ($4.25 million) and roster bonus into a signing bonus. That nearly halves the defensive back's 2026 cap hit from roughly $19 million to under $10 million.

However, the money the Packers saved doesn't just vanish into the ether; McKinney now has a $24.8 million charge on their 2027 books (h/t Spotrac). The Packers needed to make a move to get under the cap, and it also gives them the flexibility to add players.

Green Bay has several pressing questions that must be addressed in the coming weeks and months. The team has needs on both sides of the ball, though, so they could go a variety of ways here. Nevertheless, there are more opportunities to make meaningful upgrades after reworking McKinney's deal.

Atop the Packers' most glaring holes is a lack of edge presence on defense beyond franchise cornerstone Micah Parsons. Rashan Gary's shaky outlook in Green Bay only heightens the urgency. They need to add a viable pass rusher, with decorated veterans like Cameron Jordan, Khalil Mack, and Joey Bosa available as cost-effective ring-chasers.

Cornerback is another position group that can certainly benefit from a talent influx. Simply put, Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs and Co. didn't get the job done this past season. Is recruiting McKinney's former New York Giants secondary mate, Cor'Dale Flott, to Green Bay suddenly in the budget?

There's also a fair amount of uncertainty surrounding Packers quarterback Jordan Love's supporting cast. Backup running back and wide receiver are positions that need reinforcements. Yet, perhaps most notably, the offensive line is set to lose multiple starters.

Needless to say, McKinney's revised pact gives the Packers much-needed ammunition. He's made an incredible impact on the field since joining Green Bay in March 2024, illustrated by consecutive All-Pro nods. His presence is felt off the gridiron, too, with this unilateral action being the latest example.

Across 16 games in 2025, McKinney amassed 107 tackles, 10 pass deflections, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and a sack. He was Pro Football Focus' eighth-highest-graded safety out of 98 qualified options (81.3).
