Packers reward yet another wide receiver with massive contract extension

Green Bay now has no doubt who WR1 is.

One critique of the Green Bay Packers over the last couple years has been that they do not have a true WR1 in their group of young receivers. They have had plenty of talent but there hasn't been the unquestioned guy, like what Davante Adams was with Aaron Rodgers, or Justin Jefferson is in Minnesota. That conversation ends today.

With the various moving parts of the offseason just about wrapped up, and the salary cap freed up with the post-June 1st cuts of Brandon McManus and Nate Hobbs now off the books, Packers fans began to speculate as to what move would follow for the Green and Gold. Some were thinking the team may go and add a pass rusher, with Josh Sweat's name floated around a lot over the last few days.

Others thought the Packers would start to reward their internal options with contract extensions. Tucker Kraft is entering the final year of his rookie deal, as are Devonte Wyatt and Isaiah McDuffie just to name a few other key contributors. Green Bay's front office has made a decision, opting to go with the extension route for at least one player.

Packers shell out for huge Christian Watson extension not long after Jayden Reed's payday

Adam Schefter broke news on Thursday morning, that the Packers are extending wide receiver Christian Watson to a 4 year extension, worth $110.5 million dollars, with a $31 million dollar signing bonus.

Not many moons ago, the Packers also extended Jayden Reed on a three-year, $50.25 million deal. Even if outsiders disagree with Green Bay's evaluation that Reed or Watson are worth such money, the front office at least has conviction in the weapons they're supplying to franchise quarterback Jordan Love between that duo and 2025 first-round pick Matthew Golden.

Christian Watson has been one of the biggest additions to the Packers since he was drafted, when he has been healthy. There have been a few a lows with Watson, the lack of availability and the first play of the 2022 season when he dropped what would have been a touchdown, but there have been many more highs.

Watson showed what he is capable of, emerging as Green Bay's true WR1 after he returned from his torn ACL in 2025, setting near-career highs in just about every statistical category, despite less games played. Knock on wood, but it seems like Watson is turning a corner in his health and availability.

From the organization's viewpoint, Watson's extension makes sense. The team has had a number of young pass-catchers come and go, but Watson has been one of the most consistent in his big play ability, and despite dropping his first NFL target, has been one of the most consistent options for Jordan Love when targeted.

Additionally, the deal is in line with other emerging receivers around the league, most notably Alec Pierce, who got similar money in terms of per-year average, with Pierce getting more guaranteed money. In short, the team is rewarding Watson for what he can do on the field, but protecting itself in case there are more injury concerns down the road.

All in all, the deal makes a lot of sense for both sides, and was one that was really never kept secret. Packers GM Brian Gutekunst outright said this was likely coming after the draft, and the man delivered. Now all we can do is wait to see who is next, with Tucker Kraft being one of the most likely options.
