Packers' Sean Clifford reveals hilarious reason why he is glad Alex McGough is back
By Eric Fischer
Green Bay Packers fans have a long-standing fandom of backup quarterbacks who become cult heroes.
This is partially due to the success and overall durability of the franchise's starting quarterback over the last 30-plus seasons. For some, it was Brett Favre's longtime backup, Doug Pedersen, who was always part of Favre's hijinks on and off the field.
For others, it may have been Craig Nall, who had two stints with the Packers. No list of Packers backups would be complete without mentioning guys like Jim McMahon, Vince Young, or Seneca Wallace, who had notable careers outside of Green Bay. Further, some even point to scrappy underdog guys like Tim Boyle and Kurt Benkert.

One guy who is probably closer to the Boyle and Benkert camp of backups is quarterback-turned-receiver Alex McGough. Packers fans may remember McGough as a member of last year's practice squad, serving as the emergency backup to Jordan Love and Sean Clifford. Earlier this year, Matt LaFleur decided he wanted to see if McGough could make the transition from quarterback to receiver before he was ultimately cut prior to the start of training camp.
McGough, a two-time USFL champion and the 2023 USFL MVP, re-signed to the Packers' practice squad this week. He joined Green Bay radio station WDUZ 107.5 The Fan as the guest on the Sean Clifford Show, a show that Clifford hosts every other week, rotating with Karl Brooks.
Even as a receiver, Alex McGough's return completes the Packers' QB room
McGough first revealed that he had recently had a tryout at QB for the New York Giants before opting to come back to Green Bay.
Clifford, who currently serves as the emergency quarterback behind Jordan Love and Malik Willis, was incredibly excited to have McGough back in the locker room at 1265 Lombardi Ave, as they revealed that the "Juice Box Boys" were reunited. Naturally, this drew a large laugh from the live audience in attendance. This also prompted the question, "Who are the Juice Box Boys?"
As it turns out, it has nothing to do with actual juice boxes. Instead, it refers to the energy or "juice" the guys in the quarterback room brought to the team, from Love to Clifford and McGough. Clifford did mention that Malik Willis has since joined the club, and they are happy to get one of the founding members back on the sideline.
