Packers' stunning Savion Williams pick all but seals Romeo Doubs' fate

TWO wide receivers?!

Turns out all those wide receiver visits this offseason did mean something.

After months and months of speculation, the Packers finally did it: they took a wide receiver in the first round of the draft. When Green Bay used the 23rd overall pick on Thursday night to take Texas wideout Matthew Golden, a ton of people jumped to the conclusion that Golden could, in theory, end up being Christian Watson's replacement. Notably enough, one of those people may have been his own dad.

But Gutekunst wasn't done, apparently. Almost exactly 24 hours later, the Packers' GM surprised the crowd again by taking *another* wide receiver – this time, TCU's Savion Williams. Williams' profile as a pro wideout is significantly different than Golden's, and here's what NFL.com's scouting report has to say about him:

"Developmental wideout who offers an alluring blend of physical gifts and untapped potential. Williams is big, strong and fast but very raw as a route-runner and is unreliable with his hands. His production is uneven as a traditional wideout, but he adds a dynamic kick to the offense as a gadget runner and as a catch-and-run option underneath. He excels on power sweeps and is willful enough for consideration on short-yardage and goal-line carries on direct snaps. The ball skills can be hit-or-miss. but there are flashes to work with on tape. The difference between “siren song” or “pot of gold” could rest in Williams’ technical development and the creativity of his play-caller."

The Packers may have just drafted Romeo Doubs' replacement in Savion Williams

The Packers now officially have a Very Interesting Draft. For all the talk about how young and ascending their current wide receiver room is, they sure aren't acting like a team that's happy with what they've got. They have, in theory, drafted two starters' replacements already: Golden for Waston, and now Williams for Romeo Doubs.

Doubs, who's more of an every down, small-yard gains type of receiver for the Packers, will be a free agent after the end of next season, and has long been whispered about like a potential trade candidate between now and then. It's not serious speculation, per se, but it's enough to make you wonder what exactly the Packers are doing this weekend. And really, that's what a good draft weekend is all about.
