Packers zero in on perfect Jaire Alexander replacement ahead of NFL Draft

It would make so much sense.

The Green Bay Packers still haven't made their decision on Jaire Alexander, although nothing has changed. All signs point toward the All-Pro departing this offseason.

General manager Brian Gutekunst may hold out hope to find a trade partner, but the inevitable reality is that the Packers will release their former first-round pick. It's when the team parts ways with Alexander, not if.

Signing Nate Hobbs helps the secondary, especially given his inside/outside versatility, but the Packers' work is far from over. Free agency stripped the secondary of its depth, with Eric Stokes, Corey Ballentine, and Robert Rochell finding new homes. Alexander's imminent exit will take the departures to four, with only one cornerback walking in the door.

Green Bay's eight selections might not be enough to solve every need on the roster adequately, but Gutekunst could target cornerbacks early and often.

One name has reportedly caught their eye.

Packers reportedly take a strong interest in cornerback Trey Amos at Ole Miss pro day

Gutekunst and his staff are on a pro-day tour. He was the only general manager to attend Tetairoa McMillan's private workout, and Gutey took his heavy hitters to Oregon's pro day.

We can add another name to the list. According to Packer Report's Easton Butler, "several members" of Gutekunst's staff attended the Ole Miss pro day, where they "were heavily watching Trey Amos."

The Packers don't care about "reaching" for prospects they think can help the team.

Despite consensus boards rating them as second-rounders, Gutekunst used first-round picks on Jordan Morgan, Quay Walker, and Eric Stokes. Amos currently sits 41st on the NFL Mock Draft Database consensus board.

Talk about a perfect Packers prospect.

Amos has the size and athleticism they covet, standing at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds while earning an elite 8.86 Relative Athletic Score. He ran an excellent 4.43-second 40-yard dash. Amos didn't do any agility drills, but he still posted top marks in almost every category the Packers care about.

Per Pro Football Focus, Amos allowed only 32 receptions on 62 targets for 280 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions last season.

"If you were to judge Amos as a strong, physical player based on his appearance and frame, you'd be right. He's a strong player who will not be out-manned by his opposition," writes FanSided's Ryan Heckman. "To go with his strength, Amos is also able to stay with most receivers because he pairs his muscle with some quick feet. He is precise with being able to follow receivers in and out of breaks."

A perfect scheme fit with excellent length and elite athleticism, there is so much to love about Amos' potential in Green Bay. It's hardly surprising the team has shown interest.

The Packers may target the Ole Miss cornerback in the second round, but based on Gutekunst's track record, he could even become an option at No. 23 overall.
