Many have dismissed the Green Bay Packers' chances of competing in the NFC North this season after losing several starters, including Aaron Rodgers, but they still have a strong roster.

Green Bay got younger this offseason and also opted for affordable free agency moves due to limited cap space. But the Packers still have a roster good enough to compete for a playoff berth, especially considering how wide-open the conference is.

The Packers remain strong at several positions. Let's take a look at their biggest strengths entering the 2023 season.

3 biggest strengths on the Packers roster in 2023

3. Edge rusher

Green Bay's defense made only 34 sacks last season, but there's good reason to believe that number will increase in 2023.

Losing Rashan Gary for half the year significantly hurt the defense. The Packers lacked depth at edge rusher. Gary's return this season will give the entire defense a boost.

The Packers retained veteran Preston Smith, who has only missed one game in the past four seasons. He has made 33.5 sacks and 71 quarterback hits in 65 games with the Packers while providing strong run defense.

Green Bay selected Iowa's Lukas Van Ness in the first round of the draft. A tremendous athlete with impressive power, Van Ness can provide instant production for the Packers. He has the versatility to play multiple positions, so defensive coordinator Joe Barry can move Van Ness around to find favorable matchups.

Second-year Kingsley Enagbare impressed as a rookie, while midseason addition Justin Hollins made 2.5 sacks and four quarterback hits in only six games last year.
