3 emergency quarterback options for the Packers in 2023
Packers could start with Danny Etling
Like Clifford, Danny Etling has never thrown a pass in the regular season. But his experience being in the NFL could put him ahead of Clifford in the race to back up Jordan Love this year.
While Etling doesn't have the game experience, he has been on several different rosters and is potentially better prepared to start than Clifford. Etling has been in the NFL since 2018.
He has spent time with the New England Patriots with Tom Brady, the Atlanta Falcons with Matt Ryan, the Seattle Seahawks with Russell Wilson, and the Packers with Aaron Rodgers. Etling was part of the Patriots' Super Bowl-winning roster in 2018.
Etling will compete with Clifford for the backup job this summer. If Etling wins the job, the Packers may be forced to waive Clifford and hope they can bring him back to the practice squad.
Ideally, the Packers won't be forced to start one of their backup quarterbacks this season. Neither Etling nor Clifford has any experience throwing passes in the NFL, so it would be a big ask to expect either to step in and guide the team to victories in Love's absence.
But Etling is competing for the backup job, so he has every chance of starting if Love misses time.
