3 Packers in danger of losing their job after first week of training camp
- Could the Packers make multiple changes on special teams?
- Notable shakeup to the offensive line
2. Anders Carlson
Could the Packers make changes at punter and kicker?
Green Bay rolled the dice by drafting Anders Carlson in the fifth round to replace Mason Crosby. They will give him every chance to prove himself between now and cutdown day, but the rookie needs to find more consistency.
There's no doubting the power Carlson packs on his kicks. He has the strength to convert field goals from three miles away. But every NFL kicker can make it from any distance. Only the best do it consistently and at crunch time.
Carlson had made a steady start in the opening few days of camp, but the pressure is now on after a disastrous Saturday followed by an up-and-down Tuesday practice. In the two practices combined, Carlson converted seven of 15 attempts.
If Carlson can't find more consistency this month, the Packers may be forced to reunite with veteran Mason Crosby, who remains available in free agency.
It's unclear whether the Packers plan to stick with Carlson no matter what and hope he sorts out his accuracy issues. But it's hard to imagine they will enter the regular season with the rookie kicker if they aren't convinced that he will have the required consistency to play in the NFL.
