3 Packers in danger of losing their job after minicamp
Pass rusher Jonathan Garvin faces an uphill battle to make the Packers' 53-man roster. According to Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated, Garvin was absent at mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, and this comes after missing the voluntary OTAs.
Missing valuable practice reps won't help Garvin, nor will the Packers' depth at edge rusher.
Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, and Lukas Van Ness are the top three when healthy. Kingsley Enagbare is a roster lock after an impressive rookie season.
Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette noted that Justin Hollins was getting first-team reps at practice on Tuesday. Matt LaFleur has also praised Brenton Cox Jr. this offseason.
The Packers typically keep five edge rushers on their initial 53-man roster. It's hard to see any one of Gary, Smith, Van Ness, Enagbare, or Hollins not making it, unless Gary isn't ready to return from injury and starts the season on the PUP list. Cox could force the Packers to keep a sixth edge rusher if he plays well at training camp.
It leaves Garvin in a tough spot. There is competition for roster spots at edge rusher, and it seems he is far behind the others. He needs to turn things around at training camp or will likely miss out on a spot on the 53.
