4 Packers who won't make the 53-man roster: S Tariq Carpenter

By the end of his rookie season, Tariq Carpenter had become a regular on special teams for the Packers. That gives him a shot at making the 53-man roster this year.

The concern for Carpenter is that the Packers have already invested a lot at safety this offseason and could still add another player in the draft. Green Bay signed Tarvarius Moore and re-signed Rudy Ford and Dallin Leavitt. As things stand, Ford and Darnell Savage would be the likely starters on defense, with Moore and Leavitt providing backup and playing mostly on special teams.

For now, there's likely a spot on the roster for Carpenter, but for how long?

If the Packers add a safety in this year's draft, whether it's Alabama's Brian Branch in the first round, or a Day 2 or 3 target like Florida State's Jammie Robinson or Alabama's Jordan Battle, where does it leave Carpenter?

Let's say they draft Robinson. Green Bay would then have Darnell Savage, Rudy Ford, Jammie Robinson, Tarvarius Moore, and Dallin Leavitt. That's a pretty solid group. Maybe they would keep a sixth safety, but they probably wouldn't need to.

If the Packers draft a safety, Carpenter could face an uphill battle to make the Packers' 53-man roster.
