4 Packers sleepers who could steal a key roster spot at training camp
The Green Bay Packers wanted to fix their salary cap and get younger on both sides of the ball this offseason. They have achieved their goal.
Part of that means giving opportunities to young, unproven players. The Packers enter the new season with a rookie kicker, two rookie starters at tight end, and an entire wide receiver room made up of rookies and second-year players.
And the door is open for others to make an impact at training camp, for a young player slipping under the radar to stand out and steal a roster spot. Here are four players to watch closely.
Everyone is talking about Tyler Goodson, Patrick Taylor, and rookie Lew Nichols III in the battle for the third running back spot this summer. But a name to watch is Emanuel Wilson, an undrafted rookie the Packers signed in May.
Wilson played at Fort Valley State College, and he dominated in 2022, rushing for 1,252 yards and 15 touchdowns at an impressive 6.8 yards-per-carry average. He was named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Overall Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year.
"Wilson's size and burst are NFL-caliber and worth keeping an eye on if he makes it into camp as a priority free agent," writes Lance Zierlein of NFL.com.
The RB3 job is available, but there will be competition. If Wilson can contribute on special teams, he could jump ahead of the other three and make the roster.
