4 Packers sleepers who could steal a key roster spot at training camp
Malik Heath was one of the Packers' biggest surprises during the offseason workout program. He made plays at seemingly every practice, even regularly earning first-team reps. It was a great start for the undrafted rookie, who made the most of more opportunities with seventh-round choice Grant DuBose sidelined due to injury.
The Packers' top five of Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Samori Toure, and Dontayvion Wicks is unlikely to change, barring injury. Green Bay may only keep these five receivers on its initial 53-man roster.
It's up to the receivers on the roster bubble to show why they should be the sixth receiver, and Heath has already been doing that.
Maybe we shouldn't be surprised. Heath is coming off an excellent season at Ole Miss, having caught 60 passes for 971 yards and five touchdowns.
The opportunity is there. Many undrafted rookies have found a path to the Packers' roster and contributed for many years. Allen Lazard is a recent example at wide receiver.
Heath did all he could to stand out during organized team activities and minicamp. The competition steps up a level at training camp, but if he can stack success over the next few weeks, he has every chance of landing a coveted spot on the 53-man roster.
