5 things to watch at Packers OTAs starting this week
4. Packers backup quarterback battle begins
The backup quarterback job has been Jordan Love's for the past couple of years. With Love taking the reins as QB1, there is an opening for the backup job.
The two quarterbacks on the roster outside of Love are Danny Etling and Sean Clifford. Neither has thrown a pass in the NFL.
Etling has experience on his side. While he hasn't played a regular-season snap, he has been in the league since 2018. Etling was in the same quarterback room as Tom Brady when the New England Patriots won Super Bowl LIII. He has been on seven different NFL teams, including the Packers.
Clifford doesn't have the NFL experience, but he was a Packers draft pick last month. They liked him enough to select him in the fifth round, and that helps his chances of making the roster.
It all comes down to which quarterback has the better summer. The Packers may still bring in a veteran at some point. But for now, it's Etling and Clifford competing for the No. 2 spot in Green Bay. That begins this week with the start of OTAs.
It will be interesting to see both of them on the practice field in the coming weeks.
