Christian Watson's quote about having zero catches is why the Packers need him
In a league filled with wide receivers who want the spotlight all to themselves, the Green Bay Packers are lucky to have Christian Watson.
At his best, Watson is unstoppable. Defenses are terrified of his ability to hurt them deep, as evidenced in the playoff win over the Dallas Cowboys when he drew triple coverage, leaving space underneath for Romeo Doubs.
Watson can take over games and shift momentum with one spectacular play. Packers fans know this. We've seen it time and again.
What's arguably even more impressive is how Watson reacts to not getting the football.
Christian Watson is a class act, and the Packers are lucky to have him
Statistically, Watson has made a quiet start to the season, with three catches for 13 yards and a touchdown, all in the season opener. In Week 2 against the Indianapolis Colts, the former second-round pick didn't even get a target.
Many star receivers would get frustrated and demand more targets. Not Watson. He loved it because the Packers found a way to win.
"The motivation to win a football game is enough for me," said Watson. "I'm going to do whatever it takes to win a football game."
It's one thing for Watson to say this, but his play on the field backs it up. He got open a lot against the Colts—as in, there were plays when he was in a different zip code to any defender—but he never complained. On one play, Malik Willis took off and ran instead of throwing it to him, and Watson sprinted downfield to make a block.
Of receivers with at least 40 run-blocking snaps this season, Watson has the third-highest PFF grade. The Packers have a bunch of talented blockers in the receiving room, but Watson has become arguably the best.
Would he love to catch three touchdowns every week and lead the league in receiving? Of course. But Watson's focus is on winning. If that means getting downfield and blocking for his running backs, so be it.
Watson is the ultimate team player, and the Packers are so lucky to have him.
