Improving this one area can lead Jordan Love to superstardom
One season was all the Green Bay Packers needed to see from Jordan Love to determine that he was the future of their franchise.
There were some ups and downs during his first full season as Green Bay's signal caller, but Love's overall progression and development showed he is more than capable of being the next long-term starter for the Packers. However, one area in particular needs some work if Love is going to ascend to superstar status.
Deep ball accuracy.
On throws that traveled 25+ yards last season, Love completed just 34.7% of those attempts, ranking 15th in the NFL. While landing in the middle of the pack is fairly impressive, considering this was the first season that he was Green Bay's starter, more is expected of him this year.
And before this gets dismissed as a from-the-outside-looking-in type of opinion, this is a belief shared by a key member of the Packers coaching staff.
Packers want Jordan Love to improve deep-ball accuracy in 2024
The Athletic's Matt Schneidman recently noted that Green Bay's offensive coordinator, Adam Stenavich, wants Love's deep ball accuracy rate to be around 50% this season. Improving Love's accuracy rate on passes of that distance would go a long way, considering his 49 attempts of this variety were second only to Jalen Hurts last season (52).
With his high volume of attempts, increasing his completion percentage could take a productive Packers passing game and turn it into a lethal one among the best in the league.
Even if Love is not able to get to the 50% mark, as noted above, getting better in this area should be expected with the guidance of head coach Matt LaFleur. The scheme employed by LaFleur is quarterback-friendly, and with the level of importance being placed upon the deep ball, you better believe that concepts to make this easier on Love have been and are actively being implemented as the start of the regular season grows near.
Improving upon last year's deep-ball accuracy will make a huge difference for the Packers and Love this season. For the Packers, it would reinforce their decision to sign Love to the four-year, $220 million extension in the offseason and definitively prove they have the long-term answer at quarterback.
And for Love, it would see him become the latest Green Bay quarterback to ascend to superstar status, a description that has applied to Packers signal callers for 30 years.
