NFL.com creates wild scenario that sees Packers swap Jordan Love for Justin Fields
Twelve months ago, Chicago Bears fans insisted they had the answer at quarterback. With Aaron Rodgers finally gone, the Bears took victory laps because Justin Fields was supposedly a better player than Jordan Love.
Then Week 1 happened. Love and Fields combined for four touchdown passes to Packers players—Love had three while Fields hit Quay Walker for a pick-six.
This offseason, the Bears traded Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers for nothing, while the Packers are about to make Love one of the richest quarterbacks in league history. Fortunately, Green Bay drafts quarterbacks when it doesn't need to, allowing the team to find the best fit and give them time to develop.
But imagine a world where the Packers lost Love and brought in Fields? NFL.com has created such a scenario.
NFL.com creates a worst-case scenario for Packers
Chad Reuter of NFL.com put together a fun exercise, a win-now mock draft for all 32 teams featuring active players. Every player in the NFL is available, which is why Patrick Mahomes goes first overall. The draft order remains the same from the most recent draft, when Green Bay picked 25th overall.
By that stage, Jordan Love and most of the top quarterbacks were gone. Green Bay instead went defense by selecting All-Pro defensive lineman Chris Jones.
Brian Gutekunst passes on the quarterbacks again in the second round, instead waiting to select Justin Fields with the 89th overall pick.
"Fields showed enough improvement during the 2023 season to give the Packers hope that Matt LaFleur could help him take the next step," writes Reuter.
To make this even worse, the Bears' quarterback? Aaron Rodgers, whom they selected ninth overall.
The Detroit Lions ended up with rookie Michael Penix Jr. and the Minnesota Vikings drafted Matthew Stafford just to make the NFC North shakeup all the more bizarre.
Green Bay would easily have the worst quarterback situation in the division, which just doesn't sound right to type. That never happens. Whether it's Brett Favre or Rodgers or Love, the Packers often have the best quarterback room in the division. Never the worst.
Fortunately, it was just an exercise. I love the idea and creativity but don't like what this dramatic draft shakeup would mean for the Packers' future.
