Olympic gold medalist was at Packers minicamp just three months ago
On Wednesday, Roje Stona won Olympic gold in the discus for Jamaica. Just 95 days earlier, he was trying out for the Green Bay Packers at rookie minicamp, playing alongside draft picks like Edgerrin Cooper and Javon Bullard.
Stona's 70-meter throw set a new Olympic record, taking home the gold medal in front of 70,000 fans in Paris, France.
The 25-year-old competed at Arkansas and Clemson and has represented Jamaica at the World Athletics Championships and Commonwealth Games. Earlier this year, he received tryouts from the Packers and New Orleans Saints at rookie minicamp despite not previously playing football.
Green Bay had Stona listed as a defensive lineman during their minicamp. He didn't get an opportunity with either NFL team, but it worked out for the best. Instead of taking part in Packers training camp, he was in Paris becoming an Olympic champion.
Matt LaFleur had hilarious reaction to Packers tryout player winning Olympic gold
Speaking to reporters on Thursday morning, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was asked whether he remembers Stona from rookie minicamp.
"No, not really," said LaFleur. He joked that defensive line coach Jason Rebrovich "trained him well."
Stona took part in the Arkansas Pro Day, running a 4.76-second 40-yard dash while posting 23 reps on the bench press. As a defensive tackle, he earned a Relative Athletic Score of 8.84 out of 10. It's no surprise the Packers brought him in for a tryout.
Even after winning a gold medal, Stona wouldn't rule out trying a career in football again. Although his lack of experience will make a switch to the NFL challenging, he will have learned a lot from his time at minicamp.
Maybe he can return to Green Bay and play a role in a championship-winning team. Winning an Olympic gold medal and Super Bowl in the span of seven months sounds pretty good, doesn't it?
