4 bargain free agents Packers should target to fix biggest needs
Jordan Whitehead, S
Another free-agent safety the Packers should consider is Jordan Whitehead, who spent the past two seasons playing in Robert Saleh's defense with the New York Jets. Hafley has experience working with Saleh and is expected to bring a similar system to Green Bay. Whitehead would be an ideal fit in Hafley's defense.
"Whitehead is a great fit in a defense that predominantly deploys single-high looks, bringing solid ball skills as the deep-third center-fielder over the past few seasons in addition to his true strength as a box defender roaming near the line of scrimmage," writes Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus.
That's exactly what the Packers need. Hafley is expected to run a lot of single-high coverages, which is a different approach from former defensive coordinator Joe Barry, whose defense featured two-high safeties.
Whitehead has spent the past two seasons with the Jets, starting all 34 games. He made 17 pass defenses and six interceptions in that time.
Before that, Whitehead's first four seasons came with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He started 55 games, making 25 pass defenses and five interceptions and helping the Bucs win the Super Bowl in 2020.
Whitehead is an experienced starter who would fit perfectly in the Packers' new system.
