Packers fans can only laugh as Lions completely overpay Jared Goff
The Detroit Lions did what?
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Lions are signing quarterback Jared Goff to a four-year, $212 million contract with $170 million guaranteed. You didn't misread that. The Lions just completely overpaid Goff.
And it directly impacts the Packers. Not only will it have an effect on the upcoming Jordan Love extension, but it also places a countdown clock on the Lions' Super Bowl window.
To find consistent success in the NFL, you need at least one of two things: A franchise quarterback or a top-five roster on affordable contracts. The Lions have neither.
Detroit had already paid Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell. They've now handed Goff superstar quarterback money, and it's only a matter of time before new deals for Aidan Hutchinson and Kerby Joseph come up. They will need to pay Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta in a couple of seasons. There's only so much money to go around.
The Lions are built to win now, but the Goff contract could hold them back beyond the next couple of seasons. Packers fans are loving the news.
Best reactions from Packers fans after Lions hand Jared Goff huge extension
Goff has been excellent for the Lions, but is he a franchise quarterback? Can he win without a great roster around him? The Lions better hope so. Packers fans are happy to see their division rivals overpay at the quarterback position.
Make no mistake, the Lions are Super Bowl contenders this season. Goff has been fantastic in their current system. But what happens if you take away offensive coordinator Ben Johnson? What if Goff reverts back to the level of play that made Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams want to replace him?
Goff could realistically become the third-best quarterback in his own division this season. Love reached an MVP level in the second half of last year, while Chicago Bears rookie Caleb Williams has star potential.
The Lions had to pay Goff, but looking beyond this season, it could accelerate the end of their Super Bowl window, and that's perfectly fine by us.
