Packers first week of training camp proves why they need to extend Jordan Love now
Jordan Love's price is increasing without having to throw a single pass.
With Love not practicing until he signs a new contract, the Green Bay Packers have taken a glimpse at what life could look like without their star quarterback. Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt have taken the reins at training camp, and the results haven't been too encouraging.
There is no concern over Love's long-term future with the team, but what happens if he misses any time during the regular season? Do the Packers have enough quality at the backup spots?
If the first week of training camp is anything to go by, the offense may have problems if Love misses time this season.
Packers offense struggles without Jordan Love practicing at training camp
Message to Brian Gutekunst: Sign Jordan Love to a new deal now.
Three practices in, and it has been all defense. Backups Clifford and Pratt have struggled to get anything going against Jeff Hafley's unit. The defense deserves credit, but the quarterbacks have offered next to nothing.
According to Packer Report's Andy Herman, Green Bay's quarterbacks threw five interceptions during Wednesday's practice and almost had two more. He added that "the offense is a nightmare right now without Love."
The Packers need their QB1 back out there.
He needs the physical reps to build on last season's success and find rhythm with his receivers. It's also better for the defense to face a tougher challenge against the possible soon-to-be highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. Dominating against backups doesn't give them the best preparation for the season ahead.
In an ideal world, the Packers want an even contest between offense and defense. Iron sharpens iron. Until Love returns to practice, it doesn't seem like we'll get that.
The Packers need to get this deal done.
