The Green Bay Packers found themselves in a less-than-stellar group when it comes to executing on the goal line last season.

A team led by a future Hall of Fame quarterback found themselves as one of the worst in the league last season and though there may be a steep curve ahead of them to improve, it is a must for this Packers team.

In situations with 1-3 yards to go to the end zone, Green Bay's EPA (Expected Points Added) per play was -0.56, which ranked 30th in the NFL.

For comparison, Tennessee's +1.06 led the league in these situations, but that is to be expected with Derrick Henry in the backfield.

While the combination of Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon is nothing to scoff at, Henry is one of the best backs in the league, so their superiority in this area is not the least bit shocking.

Packers need to improve their goal line offense in 2023

There is something noteworthy about this list that must be mentioned.

One of the best teams in the league, the Buffalo Bills, were dead last in this metric. With a -0.88 EPA per play in goal line situations, Buffalo's low performance does come as a bit of a surprise. With that being said, this appears to be an outlier as most of the teams around the bottom of this list were not anything special last season.

On a positive note, there are a few teams near the top of the list that run similar offenses to that of Matt LaFleur.

The Browns and Dolphins were tied for sixth with a +0.34 EPA per play last season while the Rams came in at 13th (+0.21) in their disappointing campaign.

Teams that run this style of offense in all of its variants seem to be more successful near the goal line and that should bode well for the Packers as the true essence of LaFleur's scheme will be felt in 2023.
