There have been plenty of changes on the offensive side of the ball for the Green Bay Packers this offseason.

The change at quarterback has gotten all the headlines, but there is one area that Green Bay suddenly finds themselves lacking significant experience in: Wide receiver.

Currently, the most experienced wide receiver on the Packers is two-year "veteran" Jeff Cotton. After that is a group of second-year players which includes Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs. Green Bay also currently has a few rookie wide receivers of note in Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Grant DuBose.

While the long-term potential of this group headlined by Watson and Doubs is exciting, it is important to keep in mind that they are only entering the second year of their career and there will be growing pains. From themselves as pass catchers, in addition to making the change from future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the still unproven Jordan Love.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a young group of pass catchers grow and develop in tandem with a hopeful franchise quarterback. With that being said, in an ideal scenario there would be someone with a bit more experience to be Love's safety blanket as well as a mentor to the other pass catchers on the roster. That does not appear to be a priority for the Packers' decision makers.

Packers lack experience at receiver, but focus is on bigger picture

Here is the deal -- at some point there is going to be some miscommunication or a game where nothing clicks in the passing game. This will lead to fans and analysts alike pointing fingers as everyone plays the blame game. It is important to keep the big picture in mind when it comes to hypothetical scenarios such as this.

The Packers are not exclusively focusing on the 2023 NFL season, and that is the right decision. This is an organization looking to build something that can last for more than one season and return to their status of perennial NFC North champions and deep playoff runs.

In order to get there they will have to go through times like these where they end up having to lean on players that do not have a long track record of experience or success in the NFL. Again, this is about the broad multi-year perspective, not just the upcoming season where Green Bay is not expected to make a Super Bowl run.
