4 massive questions for Packers heading into 2024 offseason
The Green Bay Packers proved they are way closer to winning a championship than many expected. A new Super Bowl window is open with Jordan Love and the youngest roster in the NFL.
General manager Brian Gutekunst deserves his flowers for completely overhauling the offense in two offseasons. He ensured Green Bay's bumpy rebuild lasted all of eight weeks.
But the team isn't quite ready yet. While the Packers proved they can compete with the NFL's best, they must now become regular contenders. Another strong offseason will help them get there. Gutekunst and the Packers must answer four massive questions in the coming months.
4. What's next for Aaron Jones?
Gutekunst provided clarity on Aaron Jones' future during his end-of-season press conference.
"He's such an influential leader in our locker room and he's just kind of the heartbeat of our team. That's kind of the anticipation, that he'll be back," said Gutekunst.
We know Jones will likely return. However, the Packers must determine what to do about his $17.03 million cap hit. Or maybe not—Green Bay could make other moves to create room for Jones's significant cap hit in 2024.
There is no favorable solution. Restructuring provides a short-term fix but pushes more money into the future, which is the last thing the Packers need. Extending his deal would provide similar results. Do the Packers want to hand Jones a new contract entering his age-30 season?
The Packers are paying the price for pushing the salary cap can down the road in recent years. Jones will be back, but what do the Packers do about his contract, if anything?
