The Green Bay Packers may already have a quarterback problem
Just as the Green Bay Packers solved one quarterback concern by signing Jordan Love to a four-year extension, another problem has emerged.
Of course, the Packers' hopes of making a deep playoff run depend largely on Love. If he misses extended time, forget about it. However, having a capable backup can make all the difference for teams in the mix. If Love has to miss a couple of games, the Packers need someone to step in, run the offense, and get the ball in the hands of their playmakers.
The concern? That quarterback might not be on the roster. Not yet, at least.
Rookie Michael Pratt has shown encouraging signs, particularly in the offseason program, but is he ready for the backup job in year one?
Last year's backup, Sean Clifford, is off to the worst possible start to training camp.
Packers may need to sign a veteran quarterback after first week of training camp
Clifford showed promise in the preseason last summer, but it has been a training camp to forget so far.
The second-year pro was aiming to bounce back from a challenging minicamp, where he threw multiple interceptions, but it hasn't happened. Clifford took the QB1 reins while Love skipped practice to begin training camp, but he has continued to turn the ball over.
"From OTAs and minicamp through the first week of training camp, he has been awful," said Andy Herman on the Pack-a-Day Podcast. "He's had multiple interception days, over and over and over again."
"There haven't been any positives. There haven't been any noteworthy plays. He has not been able to get the first-team offense to function," Herman added.
If Clifford can't get back on track when the preseason arrives, and Pratt isn't ready for QB2 duties as a rookie, the Packers must consider their options.
Ryan Tannehill is available. He might not provide Pro Bowl-level quarterback play as he did for the Tennessee Titans five years ago, but he would give the Packers an upgrade on Clifford. Tannehill has thrown 4,764 regular-season passes compared to Clifford's one. The veteran could cover for a few games if Love had to miss time, and he's good enough to manage the offense.
Is Tannehill a star? No. But no backup quarterback is. He would give the Packers a dependable option off the bench if Love had to miss time.
If Clifford is still the backup quarterback in Week 1, the Packers could be a Love injury away from disaster.
