Packers elevate Innis Gaines from practice squad

The Packers made one roster move ahead of Week 9, elevating safety Innis Gaines to the game-day roster from the practice squad.

Green Bay may need Gaines' positional versatility, given all the injuries in the secondary. Starting safety Rudy Ford is questionable to play due to a calf injury. Veteran Jonathan Owens and rookie Anthony Johnson Jr. are ahead of Gaines on the depth chart, but it makes sense to add extra cover with Ford's status up in the air.

Promoting Gaines could be a sign that Ford will miss Sunday's game. Ford was added to the injury report on Thursday and didn't practice on Friday.

Gaines can also play at slot corner, which helps. Jaire Alexander will play on Sunday but has battled a back injury. Rookie Carrington Valentine will step into a starting role following the Rasul Douglas trade.

Gaines likely won't play many snaps on defense, but he provides cover and can help out on special teams.

The Packers still have an opening on their 53-man roster following the Douglas trade. Elevating Gaines to the game-day roster doesn't change that. He will return to the practice squad following Sunday's matchup with the Los Angeles Rams.
