Packers fans rejoiced when Seahawks drafted Devon Witherspoon
And relax. The Green Bay Packers haven't made their first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft yet, but they should be thankful for the Seattle Seahawks.
Seattle surprisingly took Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon with the fifth overall selection, just one pick ahead of the Detroit Lions. That's great news for the Packers and Jordan Love.
Detroit has done a fantastic job of rebuilding its roster, but it needs help at cornerback. Witherspoon at No. 6 would've been a tremendous pick for the Lions. The fact they immediately traded down suggests they were also surprised by the Seahawks' decision.
The Lions' loss is the Packers' gain, and fans have expressed their relief.
Packers fans rejoiced as Lions miss out on star cornerback
Immediately after the Lions missed out on Witherspoon, Packers fans, and the rest of the NFC North for that matter, were relieved. Witherspoon to Detroit would've been bad news for the entire division.
Packers fans took to Twitter to express joy in their team not having to take on Witherspoon two times a year.
Witherspoon has star potential and would've been a dream first-round pick for the Lions.
"Witherspoon is a lean, rangy cornerback with outstanding quickness, instincts and ball skills," wrote NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah, who ranked Witherspoon fifth among all propsects in the draft class.
While an NFC rival gets stronger with Witherspoon, it's a relief that the talented Illinois cornerback won't be playing against the Packers twice a season.
Jordan Love should be happy, too. As Love prepares for his first season as the Packers' starting quarterback, there are going to be some ups and downs as he gets comfortable in the role. Having to take on Witherspoon wouldn't have been an easy matchup two times a year.
The Lions may still find their cornerback in this draft. Thankfully, it won't be Devon Witherspoon.
