5 Packers who could be cut before playing a snap in 2023
4. Sean Clifford
Sean Clifford might be the frontrunner to back up Jordan Love this season, but making the roster is hardly a foregone conclusion. The Packers have two 2018 draft picks on the roster: Danny Etling and Alex McGough.
None of the three quarterbacks aiming to win the No. 2 job have thrown a regular season pass.
Clifford's advantage is that the Packers drafted him in the fifth round. But the other two have more NFL experience than him.
The New England Patriots drafted Etling five years ago. There, he won a Super Bowl and learned from Tom Brady. He may not have regular-season reps to his name, but he has been part of successful teams and had the opportunity to learn.
McGough landed a deal with the Packers after dominating in the USFL. He was named the league MVP earlier this year after throwing for 2,105 yards, 20 touchdowns, and five interceptions, while adding five rushing touchdowns.
Etling and McGough provide tough competition for Clifford, a fifth-round rookie who may take time to get up to speed. Then there's the possibility of the Packers adding another veteran this summer.
Clifford has work to do at training camp to earn his roster spot.
