5 Packers who could be cut before playing a snap in 2023
2. Anders Carlson
Anders Carlson is the only kicker currently on the Packers' roster ahead of training camp. That's promising, but the rookie shouldn't get too comfortable just yet. He needs to make a good impression in the coming weeks to ensure the job is his.
Carlson showed off his power during the Packers' minicamp, but the pressure will only increase as training camp and preseason arrive.
His college record wasn't great. In his five years at Auburn, Carlson converted only 30 of 56 field goal attempts for 40+ yards. That's an awful 53.57% conversion. If Carlson can't improve on that number in the NFL, he won't last long in Green Bay.
The Packers could turn to a veteran free agent at any point, and they are spoiled for choice.
Robbie Gould and Ryan Succop are two experienced kickers they could bring in. The most logical move would be to reunite with Mason Crosby, who remains available after becoming a free agent in March. Crosby can still play.
The Packers will give Carlson every chance to win the job, but he needs to deliver. If he is inconsistent during training camp and the preseason, it might not take long for the Packers to make a change at kicker.
