Packers might surprisingly be a safe bet vs. Rams in Week 9

The Green Bay Packers haven't provided many reasons to be optimistic this season. Since beating the Chicago Bears in the season opener, their performances have declined dramatically, leading to a four-game losing streak.

However, Green Bay has an opportunity to put a victory on the board in Week 9 against the Los Angeles Rams, and not just because of Matthew Stafford's injury.

Stafford's status will play a major role, of course. He is questionable due to a thumb injury. But there is another interesting betting trend that is worth looking at.

Crazy betting trend works in Packers favor vs. Rams

How could Mike McCarthy's Dallas Cowboys impact the Packers this week? Well, there's an interesting trend this season. Every team that has played against the Cowboys has failed to cover the spread the following week.

Here's a summary of how each team got on the week after playing Dallas:

  • Week 2: Giants (Won 31-28 vs. Cardinals; spread was -4.5, margin of 1.5)
  • Week 3: Jets (Lost 15-10 to Patriots; spread was +2.5, margin of 2.5)
  • Week 4: Cardinals (Lost 35-16 to Niners; spread was +14.5, margin of 4.5)
  • Week 5: Patriots (Lost 34-0 to Saints; spread was -2, margin of 36)
  • Week 6: 49ers (Lost 19-17 to Browns; spread was -9.5, margin of 11.5)
  • Week 7: Chargers (Lost 31-17 to Chiefs; spread was +5.5, margin of 8.5)

All six opponents didn't cover the spread. Notably, those teams went 1-5 the week after playing the Cowboys, too. Why is this notable for the Packers? Last week, the Rams played the Cowboys.

It could be a coincidence, but it could also have something to do with the physicality the Cowboys play with. Dallas is a tough football team with an outstanding defense. It ranks third in yards allowed and fourth in points allowed per game.

The six teams to play Dallas this season averaged 15.2 points the following week. Only the New York Giants scored more than 17 points the week after playing the Cowboys.

It's certainly notable.

The Packers haven't been easy to watch this season, but they have an opportunity to get a positive result in Week 9. If this trend continues for another week, the Packers could be a safe bet against the Rams.
