Packers have already settled one of top training camp battles
The Green Bay Packers' latest roster move just about settles one training camp battle.
Green Bay has officially released quarterback Danny Etling. The team announced the move on Sunday.
Barring something surprising like the Packers signing a free agent like Carson Wentz, this move likely shows a decision has been made at backup quarterback. And it's good news for rookie Sean Clifford.
The Packers now have three quarterbacks on the roster: Jordan Love, Clifford, and recent signing Alex McGough.
McGough won the USFL MVP, but Clifford's performances over the past week have helped him pull ahead in the competition to back up Love.
Timing of Packers roster move is good news for Sean Clifford
The fact this decision has come a day after the Packers' Family Night practice likely isn't a coincidence.
Clifford has made a number of impressive plays on the practice field, including at Family Night.
Aaron Nagler of Cheesehead TV tweeted: "I get asked a lot, and I mean A LOT, about what, if anything, has surprised me during camp. This year it's an easy answer: Sean Clifford. It's still early, but he not only belongs, he's getting better every time he's out there."
And Nagler isn't the only one who is impressed with Clifford's work so far this summer.
Etling has more NFL experience than Clifford, having been in the league since 2018. However, neither player has attempted a pass in the regular season.
The Packers drafted Clifford, and he is a quarterback they can develop over the next couple of seasons.
While this training camp battle isn't officially over -- McGough could outperform Clifford, or the Packers could sign a veteran -- it sure seems that they are moving forward with Clifford.
If nothing else, Clifford has done enough to deserve a roster spot, and it seems unlikely the Packers will keep three quarterbacks.
Etling's release likely indicates that Clifford will back up Love this season.
