Packers GM makes strange comment about Jordan Love's future
Watching the 2023 NFL Draft play out, it sure seemed like the Green Bay Packers emphasized surrounding Jordan Love with talent on offense. However, GM Brian Gutekunst made a strange comment about Love in his post-draft press conference.
The Packers went strong on offense throughout the draft, selecting two tight ends, three wide receivers, and a running back.
Tight end Luke Musgrave and wide receiver Jayden Reed were second-round choices, and tight end Tucker Kraft was selected soon after in the third.
Green Bay got Love a ton of help. He enters his fourth season with the Packers, but his first as the starting quarterback following the Aaron Rodgers trade.
Following the draft, Gutekunst was asked about Love.
Packers: Brian Gutekunst shows lack of commitment to Jordan Love
By Tuesday, the Packers must decide whether to pick up Jordan Love's fifth-year option. However, it appears they are yet to make a decision.
Gutekunst went a step further, saying it would be "a lot of money for a guy who hasn't played." Wow.
That's hardly a sign of confidence in their young quarterback.
It is a dilemma, there's no doubt about it. According to Over The Cap, Love's fifth-year option would cost the Packers $20.27 million in 2024, which would be fully guaranteed.
The benefit of exercising the option is it ensures Love is under contract for two more seasons. If they decline the option, Love will become a free agent when his rookie contract expires following the upcoming season.
The risk of declining the option is Love dominating in 2023. He would then be the hottest free agent in the NFL entering the offseason, possibly forcing the Packers to use the franchise tag. However, if they pick up the option and he struggles, they'd be unable to move on from him next offseason as he would be owed over $20 million fully guaranteed.
From a fan's perspective, it is a tough decision. But for the team that has seen him day in, day out, surely they have a good idea of whether they believe Love is ready. If they are confident he's their guy, picking up the option is a no-brainer.
Gutekunst's comments were strange and hardly gave a ringing endorsement for the former first-round pick.
By Tuesday, we'll get a better idea of the Packers' commitment to Love moving forward. Picking up his option would be a huge vote of confidence. A big decision awaits.
