Packers trade with Jets already looks like a genius decision
The Green Bay Packers have fleeced the New York Jets again. It started with the Aaron Rodgers deal, when the Packers landed multiple premium draft picks for a 40-year-old quarterback who said he was 90 percent retired.
General manager Brian Gutekunst struck another deal with the Jets in this year's draft.
The Packers gave up basically nothing to move up 15 spots in the fourth round. It only cost Green Bay a sixth-rounder, and Gutekunst made the deal to select safety Evan Williams. Many called it a reach at the time, but Williams is already proving Gutekunst right.
It's only the preseason, but the Packers may have hit the jackpot with another Jets trade.
Trading up for Evan Williams looks like a genius move for Packers
There's something about the No. 33 jersey that automatically makes you a star. Aaron Jones and Micah Hyde are the previous two players to hold that number, and Williams has looked like Hyde this summer.
The Packers have used him as a starting safety and nickel in Jeff Hafley's defense, and he is on track to play a significant role as a rookie.
Williams has at least four interceptions at training camp, and he has made the perfect start to the preseason. Through two weeks, he has Pro Football Focus' seventh-highest tackling grade and ninth-best coverage grade at the safety position.
According to PFF, he played 15 coverage snaps in the preseason opener, allowing only 14 yards. He also forced a fumble.
The Packers have rebuilt their safety room. Williams is a standout performer this summer but isn't guaranteed to start, thanks to Xavier McKinney and Javon Bullard. However, he will feature in Hafley's defense, considering his versatility.
The Hyde comparisons are understandable. He is playing at safety and in the slot and can't stop forcing turnovers.
Green Bay knew his potential in this defense but had to trade up to get him. Thankfully, Gutekunst had the Jets on speed dial.
