Packers Week 1 depth chart answers biggest questions
With the regular season opener at Soldier Field only days away, the Green Bay Packers have released their latest depth chart.
As ever, the depth chart isn't the be-all and end-all, but it does show us where the team stands at each position. It also gives us a clue about which players will start against the Bears this weekend.
The updated depth chart answers many of the biggest questions following training camp, such as the starters at safety, the plan at center, and also special teams. With that in mind, let's break down the Packers' Week 1 depth chart.
Quarterbacks
- Jordan Love
- Sean Clifford
Running backs
- Aaron Jones
- AJ Dillon
- Emanuel Wilson
Wide receivers
- Christian Watson
- Romeo Doubs
- Jayden Reed
- Malik Heath
- Dontayvion Wicks
- Samori Toure
Tight ends
- Luke Musgrave
- Josiah Deguara
- Tucker Kraft
- Ben Sims
Offensive tackles
- David Bakhtiari (LT)
- Zach Tom (RT)
- Yosh Nijman (LT)
- Rasheed Walker (RT)
- Caleb Jones (RT)
Guards
- Elgton Jenkins (LG)
- Jon Runyan (RG)
- Sean Rhyan (LG)
- Royce Newman (RG)
Centers
- Josh Myers
- Jon Runyan
The starting offensive line is as expected: David Bakhtiari, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Jon Runyan, and Zach Tom. Despite a difficult summer, all signs point to Myers retaining his starting job at center.
Interestingly, it is Runyan listed as the top backup, not Tom. Both players spent time playing at center during the preseason. Runyan stepping in would require a reshuffle, with someone filling in for him at right guard.
The biggest takeaway is the lack of depth at guard. Being an injury or two away from Royce Newman starting is less than ideal.
Defensive ends
- Kenny Clark
- Devonte Wyatt
- Colby Wooden
- Karl Brooks
Nose tackles
- T.J. Slaton
- Karl Brooks
Outside linebackers
- Rashan Gary
- Preston Smith
- Lukas Van Ness
- Kingsley Enagbare
- Justin Hollins
- Brenton Cox Jr.
Inside linebackers
- De'Vondre Campbell
- Quay Walker
- Isaiah McDuffie
- Eric Wilson
Cornerbacks
- Jaire Alexander
- Rasul Douglas
- Keisean Nixon
- Carrington Valentine
Safeties
- Darnell Savage
- Rudy Ford
- Jonathan Owens
- Anthony Johnson Jr.
- Dallin Leavitt
- Zayne Anderson
No major surprises on defense. Rudy Ford seemed to be the frontrunner to start next to Darnell Savage following the preseason, and this confirms it. Jonathan Owens is likely the main backup at safety, with rookie Anthony Johnson Jr. getting the opportunity to develop in a backup role this year.
Kicker
- Anders Carlson
Punter
- Daniel Whelan
Holder
- Daniel Whelan
Long snapper
- Matt Orzech
Kick/punt returner
- Keisean Nixon
- Jayden Reed
No surprises here. Anders Carlson, Daniel Whelan, and Matt Orzech are the only players at their respective positions on the roster. Keisean Nixon remains the top choice on kick and punt returns following his All-Pro season, with rookie Jayden Reed next up.
