Packers: Winners and losers from the 2023 NFL Draft
Winner: Joe Barry
If the Packers' defense isn't one of the best in the league this season, serious questions need to be asked of defensive coordinator Joe Barry. A late-season response from Green Bay's defense last year may have saved Barry his job, but the pressure is on now.
The Packers continue to invest heavily in the defense, adding yet another first-rounder at a premium position with edge rusher Lukas Van Ness.
Green Bay's projected starting lineup for 2023 features seven first-rounders: Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, Rashan Gary, Quay Walker, Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, and Darnell Savage. That's before we even include Van Ness.
Along with that, the Packers have invested in free agency over the years, signing Preston Smith, De'Vondre Campbell, and Rasul Douglas to multi-year deals.
Green Bay has All-Pros and Pro Bowlers at every level of the defense, as well as first-rounders at defensive tackle, edge rusher, inside linebacker, cornerback, and safety.
Joe Barry has an incredible amount of talent to work with on defense. Along with Van Ness, the Packers drafted Colby Wooden and Karl Brooks, two talented defensive linemen with positional versatility and a ton of pass-rush ability.
Barry is a big winner after the draft, although the pressure is now on to deliver a top-10 defense.
