Recent Packers draft pick is already in danger of losing a roster spot
With Jordan Love not practicing, the Green Bay Packers' offense has been heavily outperformed in the opening week of training camp.
It's an encouraging sign for Jeff Hafley's defense, which is attacking the football, getting into the backfield, and playing with energy, just as advertised. But until Love returns, they have yet to face a real challenge.
Love's absence from the on-field portion of training camp has placed the spotlight on the Packers' backup quarterback situation.
Green Bay drafted Michael Pratt in the seventh round. He needs more time. But what does the offense's awful start mean for Sean Clifford's future with the team?
Sean Clifford has made the worst possible start to Packers training camp
Clifford is under pressure. The 2023 fifth-round draft choice couldn't stop throwing interceptions at minicamp and was outperformed by Pratt. Unfortunately, it hasn't gotten much better in the first week of training camp.
It creates a concerning question: Do the Packers need to sign a veteran quarterback to back up Love?
Clifford impressed during the preseason last summer but was barely needed in the regular season, attempting only one pass, which he completed for 37 yards. Love started every game and only left the field late in matchups when the result was in no doubt. It could've been a different story had the Packers needed Clifford to start a game or two.
Green Bay may keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, but recent history suggests the team prefers to stick with two. Even last year, when the Packers had a first-year starting quarterback, they were content with a fifth-round rookie providing the only backup on the roster.
Not only does Clifford have to worry about losing his job to Pratt, who impressed during the offseason program, but there is always the possibility of the Packers signing a veteran.
Clifford is under pressure entering his second season.
