Wild Packers-Ja'Marr Chase trade proposal makes absolutely no sense
The Green Bay Packers don't need to trade for a wide receiver but that's not going to stop people from saying they should. The latest example of this is Alex Kay of Bleacher Report listing the Packers as a team that could offer the Cincinnati Bengals a king's ransom in exchange for Ja'Marr Chase.
Kay proposes that in exchange for Chase, the Packers would send a 2025 first-round pick, a 2025 third-round pick, and Christian Watson to Cincinnati. He notes that this move could make sense for Green Bay since none of their receivers have truly emerged as a number one threat.
"Green Bay has plenty of quality receivers on the roster, but none have broken out as a true No. 1 star," Kay writes. "Chase would immediately establish himself as the go-to option in the Packers' system. He's put up over 1,000 yards and hauled in at least 81 balls in all three of his NFL seasons, including in 2022 when he appeared in just 12 games due to injury."
As Kay notes, the Packers' leading receiving last year was Jayden Reed with 793 yards. While Kay says that "leaves a bit to be desired", something to take into account with Reed is that last year was his rookie season. The second-round pick out of Michigan State might have taken time to find his footing but so did Jordan Love, who was the full-time starter for the first time in his career. Once those two started to gel, it felt like this could be something we see a lot from the Packers offense moving forward.
Packers trading for Ja'Marr Chase would be a foolish decision
The Packers accomplished what they did in 2023 without any of their receivers going over the 1,000-yard mark so why trade the farm to try to fix what isn't broken? Chase is a tremendous wide receiver and it'd be fun to watch him in Green Bay but not at the price Kay is suggesting. Not only would the Packers have to send those picks and Watson to Cincinnati but they'd have to pay Chase big bucks as well.
Fortunately, Packers fans won't ever have to worry about this bogus trade going down because the Bengals probably aren't going to let Chase go. They'd be crazy to trade him and the Packers would also be crazy trading for him.
