We are getting so close to one of the best times of the year. For Green Bay Packers fans, there is nothing better than ending the lull of the offseason, watching the team put pads on and go full-on training camp mode.
But, as training camp inches close, there are plenty of players who should already know they're on the roster bubble, and that includes one specific, recent signing: wide receiver Mecole Hardman.
Signed this year as a free agent and best-known for his time with the Kansas City Chiefs, Hardman came into a wide receiver room that was, at the time, in need of more talent.
Now, though, Hardman's outlook might look drastically different.
Mecole Hardman is firmly a cut candidate heading into Packers training camp
After Hardman's arrival, the Packers still went out and drafted two wide receivers high in Matthew Golden and Savion Williams. That essentially locks in two more roster spots.
If the Packers follow recent trends, they will end up keeping six receivers on the roster. In each of the last four seasons, they've kept at least six, believe it or not.
Currently, you are looking at a room that has Golden, Williams, Christian Watson (recovering from injury), Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks all essentially being locks. That's six right there, but of course there's one spot open if Watson is kept on injured reserve to begin the year.
It isn't hard to see why Hardman is on the bubble. If he's kept, he will be the very last wide receiver on the depth chart, and maybe he stays simply because of his special teams value as a returner. But, do not overlook someone like Bo Melton who could make the team as a two-way player.
With Melton having played some cornerback this offseason, that leaves the Packers with a potentially-intriguing decision. If they like Melton to make the team, does he technically make it as a wide receiver or cornerback?
Training camp will be very interesting when looking at the final wide receiver spot; much more interesting than we would have thought back in March.
