The Green Bay Packers face off against the Washington Commanders in Week 2, and a huge statement could be made.

After a 14-point win against the NFC North rival Detroit Lions in Week 1, the Packers stay at home for another NFC showdown, this time against the Washington Commanders. For Green Bay, it's two of the toughest teams in the NFC at home.

And after their convincing win over Detroit in Week 1, Green Bay is on the cusp of making a huge statement in the NFC hierarchy if it can earn a win against Washington in Week 2.

Can the Packers knock off two NFC contenders at home to begin the 2025 season?

When you look at some of the perceived 'contenders' in the NFC, many of them have clear flaws:

  • LA Rams: Will Matthew Stafford's back stay healthy?
  • Detroit Lions: Will the losses of Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson lead to a regression?
  • Minnesota Vikings: How good can de facto rookie QB JJ McCarthy be?
  • Philadelphia Eagles: Loss of talent in the offseason + Super Bowl hangover possible?
  • Washington Commanders: Sophomore slump for Jayden Daniels?+ lack of top-end roster talent

And when you do the same exercise for the Packers, you really can't find much that is as aggressive as what I had listed for other teams. In short, the Packers could finally break through in the 2025 NFL season. They added the missing piece on defense and have an incredibly deep stable of playmakers on offense.

GM Brian Gutekunst continues to invest in the trenches and has largely done well in free agency and the NFL Draft. And when you take a broad look at the NFC like this, it is quite easy to argue in favor of the Packers making a run to the Super Bowl this year.

Sure, that's months away, but being a contender in the NFL can go up in flames quite quickly.

There is a ton of parity present in the NFL, so the Packers being able to make a run this year is on the table, and them being able to knock off two NFC contenders at home to begin the season would actually go a long way in them making it happen.
