Ranking the Packers’ 2014 Draft Needs

The Packers have plenty of depth at cornerback, and based on his 2013 season, Green Bay would be unwise to let Sam Shields enter free agency after this season. Shields has proven he can be a team’s top cover corner.
However, if his asking price is too much for Green Bay, then the Packers may be rushing to find a player with a similar skill-set in the draft.
Tramon Williams can still make plays and is a necessary veteran presence at defensive back. Micah Hyde‘s play at the nickel position and Casey Hayward’s return next season should make Green Bay feel comfortable with the defensive backs on the team.
Even though the team seems set at cornerback, there are a number of scenarios that could occur this offseason that make the position a higher need.
The position could look thinner if – Shields doesn’t re-sign, the team releases Williams in the offseason to save cap space, Hayward’s hamstring problems become a reoccurring concern, or Hyde is moved to safety.
Early indications are that the 2014 draft class is rich with cornerback talent, so the Packers may take a defensive back early despite the lack of need.
