QUARTERBACK: How far will Scott Tolzien develop?

The Packers are set with Aaron Rodgers manning the helm under center; however, the backup position is far from being decided.

The Packers brought back veteran Matt Flynn for another two seasons to be a safety net at the position just in case Rodgers misses time again this season. Flynn played admirably in four starts in 2013, going 2-2 as Green Bay’s quarterback while keeping the Packers’ playoff hopes alive.

On the other hand, Tolzien struggled in the limited action he saw in three games with both Rodgers and Seneca Wallace sidelined. It was clear the Wisconsin native didn’t have a great grasp on the playbook and was working his way through McCarthy’s scheme.

Tolzien did show some promise though and demonstrated a strong arm and the ability to move well on his feet. Parts of Flynn’s game that seem to be lacking.

Having only joined the team after the 2013 preseason, it will be interesting to see how Tolzien develops during the offseason programs. He may show a better command in the huddle and a better understanding of the Packers scheme in the preseason.

I would look for Tozlien to make a big jump in training camp. He may even challenge Flynn for the top backup spot at the position.

The Packers also added Chase Rettig in undrafted free agency, who may earn a spot on the Packers’ practice squad.
